PMHNP Post-Master's Second Certificate Admissions

We welcome your application for the St. Catherine University Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner(PMHNP)  Post-Master's Second Certificate program.

Timelines and Deadlines

Apply anytime to start in Fall (September) semester. The application priority deadline is June 1 for Fall enrollment. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; spaces are limited, and applicants are encouraged to complete the admission process prior to the priority deadline. Applications received prior to the priority deadline will be given priority for scholarships. Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space-available basis. We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2023 enrollment.


To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree: A completed bachelor's degree from an institution that is accredited by one of the regional accrediting organizations (e.g. Higher Learning Commission).

  • Masters Degree: A completed master’s (MS) or doctorate degree (DNP) degree in an APRN program of study from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

  • Grade Point Average: An undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) as well as a graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) or higher each on a 4.0 scale, and a grade of not less than 'B-' in every nursing course. Applicants who do not meet these requirements should provide an explanatory statement along with the required admission essay, with rationale for an exception to the requirement. If you are unsure of your cumulative GPA, please use these instructions as a guide to help you determine if an explanatory statement is necessary.

  • Nursing License: A current. unencumbered RN license and APRN license.

  • Work Experience: At least one year of experience as an APRN in a patient care setting.

  • Prerequisites: Specific prerequisite courses are required for the PMHNP program: review the next section for details.


Graduate-level advanced practice courses in the following areas are required:

Advanced Pharmacology

Prerequisite courses are timeless but must be completed with a grade of B or higher. Candidates may apply for the PMHNP program if they are missing one or more of the prerequisite courses, but all three must be completed prior to the first day of graduate classes. Admission Essay

Prepare a personal essay that demonstrates written communication skills and clarifies your purpose in pursuing the PMHNP certificate. All applicants whose undergraduate or graduate cumulative GPA is below 3.0 must also include an explanatory statement. Please submit one document addressing the following in separate essays and provide a separately titled section in the same document if submitting an Explanatory Statement. Do not exceed one typed, double-spaced page for each topic

  • Address the reasons why you are pursuing the PMHNP Certificate. Explain how you plan to use this certificate in your career or practice. Describe the experiences that have contributed to you pursuing this certificate.
  • Describe a situation when you or your care team had a significant impact on a patient or group of patients. What impact did you have from your perspective? What was the impact from the patient’s perspective? How were you transformed by this experience?

If you have already submitted the application form, you may upload your essay via your Application Status page (instructions for accessing the status page were provided at the time you submitted the application). Please include your full name at the top of the essay.

Explanatory Statement

If you are an applicant who does not meet the minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA requirement or received a grade of C+ or lower in any nursing course, please include an explanation of factors that affected previous academic performance, as well as your plan to ensure academic success in a graduate program. This statement should be limited to 400 words and is in addition to the personal statement described above.


Submit a current résumé highlighting professional and volunteer experiences.

If you wish to submit the résumé prior to the application, or if you are unable to upload the document to your Application Status page, you may send the résumé as an attachment via email to with “PMHNP Résumé” in the subject line.


Two recommendations are required for PMHNP applicants.

At least one recommendation should be from a current supervisor; the other recommendation may be from a professor or other employer. Personal references are not acceptable.

A link to the recommendation form will be sent when the Recommendations section of the application form has been completed. Please alert your references in advance to expect an email from St. Catherine University. These are confidential recommendations submitted directly from the references to the Office of Graduate Admission; applicants who wish to view the recommendations are responsible for making the appropriate arrangements with their references.


Transcripts are required from each post-secondary institution attended (including PSEO coursework), even if courses are recorded on another transcript and regardless of the number of credits earned. NOTE: Joint Services (formerly SMART) military transcripts are accepted, but not required. For the initial review of your application, we will accept official transcripts sent directly from the institution or scanned copies of official or unofficial transcripts. All documents must be up-to-date and include your name, institution name, all courses taken with grades and degrees received (if applicable). Screenshots from your institution’s website or degree evaluations from your student portal will not be accepted. Upon an offer of acceptance, applicants are required to submit official transcripts from baccalaureate and graduate (if applicable) degree granting institutions before registration for courses is allowed. Paper transcripts must be mailed in a sealed envelope directly from the registrar of each institution to the Office of Graduate Admission at St. Catherine University. Transcripts that do not meet these criteria will be considered unofficial and will not be used to complete the applicant’s file. Electronic transcripts must be sent directly from the institution to St. Catherine (; electronic transcripts forwarded by the applicant will not be accepted.


Applicants whose native language is not English are required to complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 80 on the IBT, or the International English Language Testing System(IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.5. This requirement is waived for students who have completed a baccalaureate or graduate degree in the United States.

Credential Evaluation

Applicants with a college or university degree completed outside of the United States must submit an official course-by-course evaluation from World Education Services (WES) or SpanTran. Original transcripts and official translations of all documents not in English must also be included. All costs related to document translation and evaluation are the applicant’s responsibility.


Qualified applicants will be contacted for a personal interview with the Admission Committee.

The Admission Committee will not review your application until we have received all required documents. Fulfillment of the admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. No credentials will be returned to the applicant.

The U.S. government requires international applicants to provide proof of ability to pay tuition and living expenses before the University can issue forms necessary to obtain a visa. International applicants must submit a Certification of Finances form.
