Dr. Elmer is a Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and also serves as the Director of the Undergraduate Summer Scholars Research Program. Currently, he teaches course content in kinesiology, exercise physiology, and research methods. Dr. Elmer's research goals are to find better ways to restore musculoskeletal function, maintain health, and improve performance in healthy and clinical populations. Specifically, his research is focused on three key areas: 1) mechanics of skeletal muscle contraction, 2) coordination of locomotor tasks, and 3) exercise interventions to improve physical conditioning and mobility. To date, his research has been supported by awards from federal agencies (NASA, NSF, CDC), health foundations, and professional societies. Applications for his research range from basic aspects of muscle contraction to applied human performance in a variety of settings, including injury, rehabilitation, ergonomics, and sport. Dr. Elmer has previously served as graduate program director and department chair and provided leadership through several organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine, Midwest - American College of Sports Medicine, American Physiological Society, and American Kinesiology Association. Finally, Dr. Elmer actively engages in K-12 and community outreach and advocacy efforts to support biomedical research.
