Learn the Building Blocks of Logic, Reason, and Argument
With a focus on student and faculty discussion on our St. Paul, MN campus, you’ll become proficient at questioning situations and beliefs, analyzing the strength of arguments, and communicating clearly.
The subject matter of your two required courses changes from year to year. Recent examples are Food Ethics, Philosophy of Sex, William Shakespeare and Philosophy, and Philosophy of Animal Minds. You’ll then choose other courses according to your interests.
Our faculty are role models and mentors, and they’re invited to speak around the world. Their many interests include biomedical ethics, human evil, Asian philosophy, effective altruism, the moral obligation of present-day people for past prejudices, philosophy and film, feminism, and environmental ethics.

With a St. Kate’s degree in philosophy, you'll gain the skills and experience to understand the history of philosophical thought, analyze the writings of others, and articulate their perspective. You will be prepared to pursue a variety of career settings in government, business, nonprofits, or education, including:
- law firms
- local, state, and federal agencies
- government or politics
- corporate training and development
- teaching, research, or administration at a college or high school
A philosophy degree will also position you to pursue graduate study or attend law or med school. Recent studies show that philosophy majors score higher than others on the Graduate Records Exam (GRE), the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), and the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).
