St. Catherine University is delighted to announce that Theo von Weiss ’23 has received the Fulbright-Nehru Award, a prestigious international award facilitating academic and cultural exchange between India and the United States. Von Weiss, an alum of philosophy and studio art, will conduct a research project for nine months in India, starting in August.
“I am so excited to be a Fulbright finalist,” shared von Weiss, who plans to study the intersection between philosophy, art, and religion at the spiritual retreat of Meherabad near Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India. “Thank you to all my teachers, professors, mentors, family, and friends for supporting me every step of this journey so far. I am grateful for this incredible opportunity and cannot wait to see how this project unfolds.”
Awardees of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad in over 140 countries worldwide. Von Weiss’ application, a highly involved and competitive process, was supported by the Competitive Fellowships office, part of the Office of Scholarly Engagement, St. Kate’s hub for engaged learning. Earlier this year St. Kate’s was named a top Fulbright producer, one of three institutions in Minnesota and 96 nationwide to achieve this recognition, thanks to the devoted work of the Competitive Fellowships office and associated mentors.
“Theo's project proposal reflects the heart of a St. Kate's education, and promises to result in a truly engaging and meaningful piece of scholarship,” said Neela Nandyal, PhD, director of Global Studies and Competitive Fellowships. “The Office of Scholarly Engagement at St. Kate's is thrilled to be able to support Theo and other Katies — both current and recent alums — in their pursuit of a Fulbright award.”
Competitive Fellowships supports both students and alumni in applying for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, as well as other fellowships, in all areas of study and degree levels. Current students and alumni interested in the 2027–28 cycle are encouraged to reach out to the Competitive Fellowships office.
