The St. Catherine University golf team got off to a rip-roaring start to the 2017-18 season. The Wildcats finished second at the Saint Ben’s Invite in St. Joseph, Minnesota after shooting an overall team score of 652. The key to St. Kate’s success over the weekend was none other than junior Sydney Busker (Detroit Lakes, Minn. / Detroit Lakes), who has been named Wildcat Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Busker was outstanding for the Wildcats all weekend, shooting a two-round score of 156 to finish in fourth place as an individual. Her performance from day one to day two was most impressive. After shooting an opening round 81 on Saturday, Busker dropped seven strokes on Sunday to shoot and even par 74 on the 18-hole course. That score ties the second-lowest single round score in school history and was the second-lowest score on the course that day.
After combining the scores of the Wildcats top four golfers, St. Kate's finished the tournament with a team score of 652 (+76), good enough for a second place finish. MIAC foe Carleton College won the tournament with a score of 636 (+60), while Bethel's Christine Piwnica won the tournament with a score of 148 (+4). The Wildcats will return to competition next weekend when they play in the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly, Iowa.
