Orientation Schedule

Welcome to St. Kate’s! We are excited to invite you to our St. Paul campus for new student orientation on August 26. During this in-person program, you will have the opportunity to connect with your peers and orientation leaders, learn about important University policies and procedures, become familiar with campus resources, and learn more about what to expect in the classroom. Watch your email for more details in August.

You will also have access to an online orientation, which is hosted in Brightspace D2L. To find the online orientation, look for the "Welcome to St. Kate's" course.

Orientation is the best way to learn about the resources available to you as a St. Kate’s student and prepare to start your program. New students appreciate the opportunity to connect with University staff and faculty — it makes it easier to reach out when you need them. What campus activities are you involved in?

  • Aside from being a Transfer Orientation Leader, I am a member of the Honors Program and will be the 2021-22 Nutrition, Exercise, & Sport Science Club secretary. Being involved in campus activities is a great way to further explore your interests, meet your fellow Katies, and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. I would encourage all new students to consider getting involved in 

Do you work anywhere on or off-campus? 

  • I recently accepted a nutrition aide position at Lakeview Hospital and couldn't be more excited! I am most looking forward to gaining real world experience within my field of study through interacting with patients and creating high-quality meals to match their unique dietary needs. I also work as a Shipt Shopper and love the flexibility it allows.

What is your favorite St Kate’s tradition?

  • The Dew Drop Bop at the end of the year is very popular and looked forward to by many students!

Name someone you met at St. Kate's that has had a positive impact on your life & why.

  • My TRW professor, Sarah Hassebroek. She radiates joy and positivity and is so passionate about what she does. She really helped me to feel more confident in myself and to feel a deeper connection to the campus community!

Have you discovered your super power? If not, what would your super power be? (What is defined as a super power is up to your interpretation/imagination)

  • My super powers are positivity and kindness.

Favorite place to hang out on campus? Or the best kept secret about St. Kate's? 

  • Dew Drop Pond is definitely my favorite place on campus. Our campus is so beautiful, and the pond is the perfect place to relax or study. 

Why do you love orientation? What is your favorite memory from your Orientation?

  • I loved getting the chance to meet professors and students. Creating these connections before school started made the transition to St Kate's so easy!

What advice would you give to incoming students? Is there anything you wish you would have known about? 

  • My best advice is to get to know your professors and also be involved in the campus community. St Kate's has so many great student organizations to take part in!

Name a character (cartoon or real) that you can relate to and why?

  • I can relate to Rapunzel from "Tangled". She's kind, adventurous, and trustworthy, and is determined to accomplish her goals and dreams. 

Name: Ashley Torres Gurrola

What campus activities are you involved in?

  • Asian Women Association- Co-chair & Treasurer, SCISO- Co-liaison, MIPS Peer Mentor, Graduates of Color- committee

Do you work anywhere on or off-campus? 

  • Yes. I work at CVS Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician. I work at Boutwells landing as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

What is your favorite St Kate’s tradition?

  • Dew drop bop is such a fun end of the year tradition. There are activities, food, and raffles. It is super fun to hangout with your friends and family. You can also volunteer. 

Name someone you met at St. Kate's that has had a positive impact on your life & why.

  • Kim Munoz is an amazing person. She has been a mentor for me throughout my years here at St. Kate's. When I was a junior in high school, I met Kim at St. Kate's First Step program. She was the coordinator and a mentor. She has been my mentor ever since.

Have you discovered your super power? If not, what would your super power be? (What is defined as a super power is up to your interpretation/imagination)

  • I am not too sure how to answer this question. When I interpret this question, I think of my strengths. I think I am a good listener (at least what others have told me). 

Favorite place to hang out on campus? Or the best kept secret about St. Kate's?  

  • When I am with my friends, we like to hangout at the pulse or in the cafe. 

Why do you love orientation? What is your favorite memory from your Orientation?

  • My favorite orientation moment is when my OL's Jenny and Peace and our group would sit down and eat dinner. We would talk about life, high school, etc. It is nice to look back and see how much time has passed. 

What advice would you give to incoming students? Is there anything you wish you would have known about? 

  • Be open-minded. There are going to be so many new things coming your way. Be open-minded to take those things in. 

Name a character (cartoon or real) that you can relate to and why?

  • Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation. She is a caring person who go to extent for her friends, family and community. I try to do that as well. I go to the extent to the help those around me. 

Name: Briley Hale

  • Student Senate - Administrative Affairs Chair,  LEAD Team,  AMP program - Research Assistant

Do you work anywhere on or off-campus?

  • I work as an Orientation Leader and a Research Assistant  

What is your favorite St Kate’s tradition?

  • My first year was spent entirely online so I have not had a chance to experience many, but one "tradition" I have noticed and loved is teaching women to be leaders. The amount of opportunities that are available on campus to help you increase your leadership skills is absolutely amazing and so encouraging!

Name someone you met at St. Kate's that has had a positive impact on your life & why.

Have you discovered your super power? If not, what would your super power be? (What is defined as a super power is up to your interpretation/imagination)

  • A super power of mine that I have rediscovered at St. Kates is my ability to persevere regardless of the situation or circumstances.  

Favorite place to hang out on campus? Or the best kept secret about St. Kate's?  

  • I haven't been able to hang out on campus much but I absolutely love hanging out by dew drop!

Why do you love orientation? What is your favorite memory from your Orientation?

  • I was unable to attend an orientation so I am very much looking forward to providing an experience I would have loved to have as well as making my own orientation memories with new Katies!

What advice would you give to incoming students? Is there anything you wish you would have known about? 

  • Try everything. Even things that you might not be sure are for you or you're super interested in. You never know what you will find that lights your passion on fire! St. Kates offers so many opportunities and resources that can greatly impact your college experience as well as your personal and professional life at and beyond St. Kates.

  • Anyone on Bob's Burgers! I'm a combination of all the Belchers and I love it (:

What campus activities are you involved in?

  • I am currently assisting conduct/write research with a psychology professor, and I hope to get my own research project started soon

Do you work anywhere on or off-campus? 

  • I work off campus as a Nanny for a family in North Oaks

What is your favorite St Kate’s tradition?

  • My favorite St. Kate's tradition is the University's dedication to loving one another and to social justice

Name someone you met at St. Kate's that has had a positive impact on your life & why.

  • I met professor Bill McDonough in the Fall of 2020 when I took his Christian Ethics course. Prof. McDonough, and his course had a wonderful impact on my life because he taught his course in a way in which was extremely inculsive. He also runs his classroom in a way in which every single one of his students is heard, known, and loved.

Have you discovered your super power? If not, what would your super power be? (What is defined as a super power is up to your interpretation/imagination)

  • My super power is my ability to adapt to any new circumstance life throws at me

Favorite place to hang out on campus? Or the best kept secret about St. Kate's?  

  • My favorite place to hang out at St. Kate's, when it's warm outside, is by the Dew Drop Pond. I love to bring a blanket and read a book or just watch the cute little ducks.

Why do you love orientation? What is your favorite memory from your Orientation?

  • I love orientation because it's a student's first big chance to get a hands on feel for what the St. Kate's community is all about, and to find a connection to the wonderful people who happen to be here.

What advice would you give to incoming students? Is there anything you wish you would have known about? 

  • Don't be afraid to try new things, or to talk to new people, and professors are there to help you so do not be afraid to talk to them! 

Name a character (cartoon or real) that you can relate to and why?

  • I can relate a lot to Jessica Day from New Girl because I have some quirky characteristics and I love giving a good pep talk

What campus activities are you involved in?

  • I'm one of the Senior Representatives on Student Senate, I'm the Public Relations Chair for Spanish Club, and I'm involved with SCISO and NAMI.

Do you work anywhere on or off-campus? 

  • I work as a Building Coordinator at the Information Center!

What is your favorite St Kate’s tradition?

  • I love the picnic with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet at the end of orientation! The sisters have lived such rich lives and have amazing stories to tell. They also have great food and prizes. It's all-around just a great time!

Name someone you met at St. Kate's that has had a positive impact on your life & why.

  • Everyone at MIPS has been amazing! I have found all of my friends there and both the staff and students are so welcoming and fun!

Have you discovered your super power? If not, what would your super power be? (What is defined as a super power is up to your interpretation/imagination)

  • My superpower is that every cat I've ever met has liked me. Yes, even the ones that apparently hate people.

Favorite place to hang out on campus? Or the best kept secret about St. Kate's?  

  • I really like sitting at the tables in the quad or the patio in Dew Drop. Our campus is so beautiful, I love being able to enjoy the outside while I study!

Why do you love orientation? What is your favorite memory from your Orientation?

  • I really love all of the different people you get to meet! St. Kate's is so diverse and you have the opportunity to get to know people that are different from you. My favorite memory from Orientation was going to Panera and Menchies with my Orientation group! It was the first time we all really got to just hang out together and I met my best friend to this day! 

What advice would you give to incoming students? Is there anything you wish you would have known about?

  • Transitioning into college is hard at any time, but this class has been dealt a bad hand of cards. It's okay to struggle and have a hard time, but ask for help! If you don't know where to go for help, start with your OL, we are here to help. 

Name a character (cartoon or real) that you can relate to and why?

  • I think I'm a lot like Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender! He is really wise which I admire, but at the same time he has a great sense of humor and is always making jokes and pulling pranks. He also has his own values and morals and sticks to them at all times, but is also a bit chaotic. We also both LOVE tea, my dream would be to open a tea shop like him!

  • Zaynab Abdi

Have you discovered your super power? If not, what would your super power be? (What is defined as a super power is up to your interpretation/imagination)

  • My super power is finding enjoyment in all situations and hyping people up

Favorite place to hang out on campus? Or the best kept secret about St. Kate's?  

  • Drew Drop Lounge or the Drew Drop Pond

Why do you love orientation? What is your favorite memory from your Orientation?

  • I love meeting new people, all the activities, all the noise, and learning stuff about St. Kate's. My favorite memory from orientation is meeting my orientation leader and getting closer to them.

What advice would you give to incoming students? Is there anything you wish you would have known about? 

  • Advice I would to students is to change your class schedule until your satisfied with it, get to know your adviser, break out of your shell and try new things, go to a lot of events, and have fun!

Name a character (cartoon or real) that you can relate to and why?

  • An anime character I can relate to is Luffy from One Piece. He is free spirited, follows his dreams, goes against the standards, helps people, surrounded by wonderful friends, and he is just Luffy. I feel like I am like that and I am just Pa Kou.

  • Student Senate (Student Parent Senator)

  • Student Activity Center at the Information Desk and Health & Wellness Clinic on campus. 

What is your favorite St Kate’s tradition?

  • The celebration on the first day of school. 

Name someone you met at St. Kate's that has had a positive impact on your life & why.

  • Beth Hamer, she has helped me a lot as a student parent by giving me resources and the support I need for my education and well being.

Have you discovered your super power? If not, what would your super power be? (What is defined as a super power is up to your interpretation/imagination)

  • I love helping people, being a voice for students and just making a difference in people’s life. 

Favorite place to hang out on campus? Or the best kept secret about St. Kate's?

  • I love hanging out at the library, it’s quiet and peaceful and I could get my work done.   

Why do you love orientation? What is your favorite memory from your Orientation?

  • I love learning new things and just learning the campus and meeting new people. My first orientation was in 2018 and I love how beautiful the campus looked and seeing so many students, I enjoyed the activities and also the yummy food! 

What advice would you give to incoming students? Is there anything you wish you would have known about? 

  • I would say just ask questions, don’t be afraid to ask them and don’t be afraid to do anything in terms of your education. Do whatever you need to do so you can succeed. Always try your best and stay positive and also, don’t let anyone bring you down. Stay strong, we can achieve all of this together! 

Name a character (cartoon or real) that you can relate to and why?

  • Mitchie Torres from camp rock because at first she is shy but eventually she opens up and she also wants to live her dreams by being a singer but she’s afraid, she’s no longer afraid anymore and I’m exactly like her character. She also loves helping people and I love to help others too. She loves to sing, write music and dance, I’m the same way.

What campus activities are you involved in?

  • CRU Bible Study treasurer, Public Health Club member, Wednesday night zumba regular

Do you work anywhere on or off-campus? 

  • CVS Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician and immunizer and the St. Paul Jewish Community Center as a lifeguard.

What is your favorite St Kate’s tradition?

  • Late night breakfast is a great way to hang out with friends and relieve stress before finals!

Name someone you met at St. Kate's that has had a positive impact on your life & why.

  • May Thao-Schuck in the Career Development office has always been there to help me and reach out around campus to get me information I may need.

Have you discovered your super power? If not, what would your super power be? (What is defined as a super power is up to your interpretation/imagination)

  • I would love to be able to breathe underwater. I was a swimmer growing up and I can hold my breath for a while, but breathing underwater would be really cool! 

Favorite place to hang out on campus? Or the best kept secret about St. Kate's?  

  • Dew Drop Lounge with the views of the Minneapolis skyline, Fontbonne Hall 2nd floor, or hammocking by Dew Drop Pond are some of my favorite places to be on campus!

Why do you love orientation? What is your favorite memory from your Orientation?

  • Orientation is a great way to discover the campus and the people you'll be seeing around for the next 4 years. You have the opportunity to meet new friends and learn about some of the traditions at St. Kate's, plus your orientation leaders are familiar faces you can wave or say hi to when you might not know anyone else!

What advice would you give to incoming students? Is there anything you wish you would have known about? 

  • Don't be afraid to ask for help. So many people at St. Kate's are here to help you or provide you with resources to help you succeed, you just have to ask! 

Name a character (cartoon or real) that you can relate to and why?

  • Amy Santiago from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She is organized, passionate, and knows how to have fun! We both get a bit over the top with our organization habits, but that's what we love to do.
