Kat Smith, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, AHN-BC, CNE, PHN serves as the Family Nurse Practitioner Program Coordinator and faculty member in the School of Nursing. With nearly two decades of experience in higher education and clinical practice, she brings a strong commitment to preparing practice-ready, compassionate primary care providers.
Dr. Smith’s clinical practice spans inpatient addiction treatment and mental health facilities, urgent care, and outpatient settings serving individuals experiencing homelessness, serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and involvement with the justice system. Her clinical interests include providing comprehensive, equitable primary care across the lifespan, with a focus on chronic disease management, preventive care, and improving access for underserved and structurally vulnerable populations. She is especially passionate about equipping future nurse practitioners with the skills needed to care for complex patients in diverse, real-world settings.
Her teaching philosophy centers on fostering clinical reasoning, confidence, and professional identity in students. She emphasizes a supportive, student-centered learning environment that challenges learners to think critically, apply evidence-based practice, and develop sound diagnostic and decision-making skills. Dr. Smith is dedicated to bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world clinical practice, ensuring students feel prepared and capable as they transition into their roles as nurse practitioners.
