Nursing students give weekly presentations on infant healthcare

Beginning this Thursday through May 5, 74 St. Kate’s RN students will be putting on a weekly Family Functions Fair on Thursdays in April and May. With presentations focused on infant nutrition, early literacy, and milestones in growth and development, the fair is geared towards families and parents of infants aged 0-12 months.

The presentations are the culmination of “Nursing Care of Individuals and Families,” the first course that nursing students take in the Bachelor of Nursing program. The series is “a signature assignment the students are working on using evidence-based practice, demonstrating collaborative care to support an inclusive and holistic view of individuals and families,” says Sara Rippie, the course coordinator.

The fair debuts Thursday, April 7, 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. on the second floor atrium of Coeur de Catherine. Presentations take place each Thursday until May 5. The event is free, and all are welcome to attend.

Thursday, April 7:

  • “Food for Thought: Infant nutrition” – nutritional requirements for ages 0-12 months, including special dietary needs and homemade baby foods.
  • “Baby Bookworm: Bonding with Books” – discussion of the ways in which reading out loud from pregnancy to the first year of life can aid development.
  • “Shots for Tots” – outline of vaccination schedules and the benefits of vaccinations.
  • “Babies, Brains & Books” – the benefits of reading to young children.

Thursday, April 14:

  • “Sleep Habits and Safety” – milestones and education for infants 0-12 months.
  • "Ultimate Guide to Infant Milestones” – social, cognitive, and psychomotor development milestones.

Thursday, April 21:

  • "SIDS and safe sleep” – recommendations and prevention strategies for infants 0-12 months.
  • "Bedtime Stories: The Importance of Literacy During Infancy” – the long term benefits of reading to young children, including neurological implications and brain development, as well as its contribution to a child’s success in school.

Thursday, April 28:

  • "Baby Food on a Budget” – discussion of infant nutrition and how to make healthy baby food while incorporating special dietary needs.
  • "Infant Nutrition Requirements"

Thursday, May 5:

  • “Infant sleep patterns/requirements" – soothing infants who may have problems falling and staying asleep.
