Dew Drop Bop celebrates 30 years

This year, Dew Drop Bop celebrates its 30th anniversary. The annual event is an end-of-the-year invitation for students, staff, faculty and alumnae to let their hair down. For many, spring wouldn't be complete without this St. Kate's tradition — but in 1987, it was just beginning.

"The housing office sponsored a new campus event this year," reads the 1986–87 St. Kate's yearbook. "Organizers of Dew Drop Bop hope it will become a new tradition at St. Catherine's."

Thirty years later, Dew Drop Bop hasn't gone anywhere, except to the Quad. The years following 1987 saw the event growing too large for the sloping ground by the pond for which it was named. Adapting to the boom in numerous vendors, full-scale amusement rides, and general joyful hubbub, Dew Drop Bop has taken place on the Quad for a number of years now.

"Dew Drop Bop brought a new and fresh approach by involving the entire St. Kate's community in games, music and food," says Alumnae Liaison Ruth Brombach '60.

"Community has always been at the core of it," agrees Brigette Marty, who has been at the helm of organizing Dew Drop Bop since she became the St. Kate's Associate Director of Student Center and Activities 15 years ago. "Students and faculty and staff and their families and their dogs can meet each other and get to know each other outside of the classroom."

"In addition to bringing us together in a more informal, sociable way, it also emulates the 'work hard, play hard' ethic of our community," Marty adds. "We have heads down working September through May, and Dew Drop Bop is that moment when we stop and say, 'We did it!'"

DDB 2017 will, fittingly, celebrate its '80s origins with an indoor '80s video game arcade, throwback toy station, and this year's special cover band: Ladies of the '80s, who impersonate performers of the decade such as Madonna and Cindy Lauper.

Stay tuned at the official Seek Team Facebook page for more details and updates as the countdown to DDB 2017 begins!

T-shirts will be available for purchase at the event.
