The St. Kate's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, a national honor society celebrating excellence in the liberal arts, presents a panel discussion: "Outside Which Box? Mental Health and Illness: An Interdisciplinary Conversation."

Faculty will discuss their research in the areas of mental health and illness. Broadly interdisciplinary, the discussion will highlight the role of the liberal arts in understanding complex issues affecting millions, and will tie to many courses and to the work of mental health professionals.

Refreshments will be provided.

Faculty on the panel:

  • Geri Chavis - Professor of English, licensed psychologist, certified poetry therapist and author of Poetry and Story Therapy: The Healing Power of Creating Expression (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2011)
  • Susan Hawthorne - Associate Professor of Philosophy, author of Accidental Intolerance: How We Stigmatize ADHD and How We Can Stop (Oxford University Press, 2014)
  • Lynda Szymanski - Professor of Psychology, director of collaborative undergraduate research and clinical psychologist with research interests centered on women, body image and health
