St. Catherine University's Director of Equity and Inclusion, Sandra Mitchell
Director of Equity and Inclusion

Sandra Mitchell serves as director of equity and inclusion at St. Catherine University. Mitchell leads the University in supporting and advancing a campus culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. She leads the development and implementation of a University-wide Inclusive Excellence plan, and designs and implements an equity framework that will be used to guide decisions, practices, and policies for the University. To achieve that plan, Mitchell focuses on articulating and developing the essential skills students must possess to succeed in diverse and inclusive workplaces and communities, and defining how educational programs and the co-curricular student experience will foster these outcomes. She also focuses on recruiting and retaining faculty and staff of color through new recruitment strategies, training, and professional development.

Prior to joining St. Kate’s, Mitchell served as intercultural program specialist at the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota. In this role, she consulted with academic departments that were developing diversity and inclusion goals, and worked with individual faculty on integrating diversity, inclusion, and social justice into the curriculum.

Mitchell previously served as the first-ever chief diversity officer at the University of North Dakota, where she provided leadership to the university’s Women’s Center, American Indian Student Services, Multicultural Programs and Services, and their newly-developed Pride Center. Prior to that, Mitchell was associate vice president for diversity and inclusion at Regis University. She oversaw policy development and program implementation for the institution’s first strategic plan for diversity.

Mitchell received her bachelor's degree in psychology and master's degrees in education from Drake University. She also holds an educational specialist degree in educational leadership and innovation from the University of Colorado.
