Traveling can be one of life's most enriching experiences, and our Traveling Scholars program offers you a way to explore new places without having to do all the planning. Your main responsibilities are take in the scenery, enjoy the company of fellow Katies, and be ready to learn along the way. You will be accompanied by St. Catherine University academics, staff, and other alumnae. Guests are welcome, or come by yourself and make some new friends during our travel adventure together.
On-site in England with Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and Virginia Woolf
September 10–22, 2019
During this 13-day literary journey in England, the lives and works of three renowned women authors will come alive. Site visits to village and city places directly relevant to our three featured authors’ personal worlds and fictional settings will be integrated with animated discussions of three novels: Austen’s Persuasion; Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day. The tour will also include a St. Kate’s-related visit to the gorgeous Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey, after which our own Whitby Hall is named. The itinerary will lift up the importance of women, both historically and in literature.
Leading the trip will be St. Kate’s 2011 Bonnie Jean and Joan Kelly Faculty Excellence award winning professor of English, Geri Chavis, and Alumni Relations Chapter Manager, Kelly Povo ‘09.
- Roundtrip travel from Minneapolis/St. Paul to London including estimated fuel surcharge and airline taxes.
- Accommodations in moderate Four-Star hotels. Single room accommodations at hotels available at additional cost.
- Private, deluxe motorcoach for transfers and touring. Handling of one piece of luggage in/out of hotels.
- Daily breakfast and select lunches, dinners, and English afternoon tea.
- Professional, licensed United Kingdom tour manager will travel with the group and provide expertise throughout the trip, adding local guides as needed. Audio system headsets will be available for tours as needed.

Meet Your Hosts
Geri Chavis, PhD, is Professor Emerita of English and Women’s Studies at St. Kate’s. Her specialties include Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century British and American literature; the genres of the novel and poetry; and courtship, marriage and family themes in literature. Chavis is also a licensed psychologist, certified poetry therapist, master mentor-supervisor and immediate past president of the National Association for Poetry Therapy, a professional organization devoted to promoting the use of language, story and metaphor for personal development and mental health. She has co-taught two study abroad interdisciplinary literature courses in England in recent years and has facilitated workshops in poetry therapy in the U.S., England, Ireland, Cornwall, and Scotland. Her latest book is entitled Poetry and Story Therapy: The Healing Power of Creative Expression, and she is currently finishing a book entitled Peril and Protection in British Courtship Novels: A Study in Continuity and Change.
Kelly Povo, alumni relations chapter manager since 2011, graduated from St. Kate’s in 2009 with a double major in Art History and Women’s Studies. As University representative for the Lifelong Learning Traveling Scholar committee, Kelly has hosted more than 10 St. Kate’s alumni programs including, in 2015, Paris, Lyon and LePuy: Art and Culture from a Woman’s Perspective. As a special bonus, Kelly has been a professional photographer for over 30 years and will document the trip and share her photos!
The cost of the trip is $4920.00 per person, which includes round trip nonstop airfare, all surface travel, all accommodations, daily breakfast, two lunches, three dinners, one English afternoon tea, entrance fees, gratuities, and insurance.
