Katie toured during her junior year of high school, and “as soon as I stepped on campus I knew I would be going here.”
Originally, Katie planned on studying nursing; however, she found her true passion after taking a communication studies class. “Building relationships is what makes me thrive. When I found out I could major in studying the way people communicate, I knew I was on the right path.”
As a first-year, she worked for the Information Technology office. Then, she moved on to Residence Life, serving as a resident advisor and mentoring a whole floor of younger students. She spent two semesters as a communications intern with Sarah’s Oasis and Dress For Success, opportunities that came through St. Kate’s Center for Community Work and Learning.
Katie also worked for the University’s Marketing and Communications (MarComm) office. She started as an office worker her junior year and was promoted to editorial assistant by summer 2016. “Of all my work experiences so far, this is my favorite! The MarComm staff has given me countless opportunities to develop new skills and take on new challenges.”
Katie will spend four months at American University Rome, Italy in 2017. She plans to study how different cultures communicate.
After graduation, she hopes to work remotely for a company — in a country outside the United States. “It is important to get our of your comfort zone and explore how people live in different parts of the world.”
There is nothing wrong with changing your major, if you find another one that fits you better — and you can enjoy every minute of it!
