Theology explores the mystery of God and humanity, and all creation in light of that mystery. The Master of Arts in Theology (MAT) degree from St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN emphasizes the exploration of your spirituality within the Christian faith tradition. Our program invites you to share in the quest for a deeper understanding of God and meaning in your life. Engage in rigorous academic study while you deepen your personal and communal spirituality.
Some students enroll in our master's degree in theology program because they plan to pursue doctoral studies but do not yet possess the necessary expertise. Many desire a degree that will equip them for the ministries in the church. Others already have professional competencies in another field and wish to acquire theological competence. Our theology master's degree program also welcomes individuals whose intention is to pursue a personal, avocational interest in theological studies.
Our 36-credit MAT degree can be completed in two years of full-time enrollment. Many students choose a part-time plan of study and complete the degree in 3-4 years. Courses meet in an evening format on our St. Paul campus.
The graduate degree provides a thorough study of biblical, historical, systematic and spiritual theology. The program focuses on Christian classics, past and present. Studies focus on the Roman Catholic tradition, but also include representative Jewish, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant texts. The program’s concentration on spirituality offers an in-depth examination of the theory and practice of Christian spirituality, past and present. To complete the program, students choose a practicum, thesis, or additional graduate course.
The Spiritual Direction Certificate (SDC) may be completed as part of, or separate from, the MAT degree.
