what can I do with a degree in Spanish?

With St. Kate’s Spanish degree, you will possess the skills to pursue a variety of careers in government, business, non-profits or education, including:

  • Federal foreign service
  • Corporations operating globally
  • Local or state agencies
  • Non-profits and non-governmental organizations
  • Teaching at a college, high school or immersion schools and camps

A major in Spanish will also position you to pursue graduate study, either in the U.S. or abroad.

what will I study?

The Spanish major at St. Kate’s combines rigorous academic work with engaging out-of-class experiences. You can even choose global awareness-themed housing to deepen your experience.

In classes such as "Critical Cultural and Literary Analysis," you will read and write about a variety of Spanish literary and cultural texts and will learn advanced analytical terminology. In "Hispanic Women Writers," you will explore the diverse histories and cultures of Spanish-speaking women writers. The class "Hispanics in the United States" will help you understand the layered history and the experience of Hispanics and Latinos in this country.

Faculty members periodically lead intensive language programs in Mexico and Spain and the Global Studies office gives you access to more than 150 study abroad programs in 50 countries, such as Argentina, Chile, Dominican Republic, Peru and Spain.

The Career Development office and the Center for Community Work and Learning coordinate service learning, internship and employment opportunities to build your skills with local non-profits serving Spanish-speaking communities.

In addition, the Spanish Club will help you expand your Spanish speaking abilities and knowledge of the cultures with activities and volunteering, including Hispanic cooking nights, salsa dancing, theater productions, Hispanic film festivals, museum outings and more.
