A St. Kate’s major in sonography, offered on our St. Paul campus, will prepare you for this diagnostic field that offers a high degree of responsibility and independence. St. Kate’s is one of two universities in the Upper Midwest to offer a Bachelor’s of Science in Sonography.

With St. Kate’s sonography degree, you'll be prepared to be valued members of integral healthcare teams in a variety of settings, including:

A St. Kate’s sonography major prepares you to take national certification exams in ultrasound physics, abdominal ultrasound and obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound or to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).

what will I study?

A St. Kate’s sonography major blends liberal arts education, one-on-one hands-on labs and clinical training to prepare you for a satisfying, rewarding and successful career.

In classes combining lectures and labs, you will learn to care for patients with a wide range of medical issues using advanced ultrasound imaging equipment to evaluate the human body, examine organ systems and vascular structures, and to detect pathological changes.

  • In classes such as "Healthcare Teams and Quality Outcomes," you will explore the common components of patient-centered care, patient safety, evidence-based practice, quality improvement and informatics.
  • In "Communication for the Sonography Professional," you will develop your skills in verbal/non-verbal communication, interpersonal listening and feedback, passive and active listening, team development and conflict management.

You will also complete 1,200 hours of clinical experience. Practicums are scheduled at several healthcare facilities across the Twin Cities. St. Kate’s faculty, who are licensed ultrasound technicians or sonographers, will also share their personal insight into the profession.
