Are you interested in politics and public policy? A St. Kate’s political science major will prepare you with a solid foundation in government structures, political theory and current political and policy issues. The program emphasizes critical thinking, research and writing skills to prepare you to become an active citizen and make a difference in the world.

With the political science degree from the St. Paul campus of St. Kate's, you'll be fully prepared to think critically and communicate effectively, with a comprehensive educational foundation for a variety of career options in government, business or public life, including:

  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Teaching middle or high school

Your degree in political science from St. Kate's will also prepare you for graduate or professional study in psychology, law or business, among other fields.

what will I study?

A St. Kate’s political science major covers American politics, international politics and political theory — including non-governmental organizations and the representation of women in politics.

  • In the "American Political Parties, Campaigns and Elections" course, you will discuss historical development, organization and role of political parties in the United States.
  • "Haves and Have-Nots" studies the distribution of wealth to understand why countries are rich or poor.
  • The "Model United Nations" course introduces you to the structure, function and agencies of the UN and prepares you to participate in the National Model United Nations conference.

In addition, St. Kate’s offers a pre-law advising and Mock Trial program where you will get hands-on experience about the American judicial system and build skills in debate, investigative research and reporting.
