Overview
Public speaking is considered by many to be the scariest thing they have to do. Although there are many techniques to improve elements of your public speaking ability, the best way to improve is to speak more. In this class, you will be required to do four formal public presentations.
In general, the purposes of presentations in this class include:
- Informing the audience so that a decision can be made about the project
- Demonstrating what you have accomplished or learned while doing the project
In this class, you should also develop professional integrity. Thus, you are not to “snow” the audience or create a false impression about your project or accomplishments. Two things to remember so you do not unintentionally create the wrong impression:
- I will compare your product (including the code) to the project description’s list of basic requirements Make sure you know what those are and verify that you have (or will) satisfy them throughout the project.
- In your future career, managers will hire you because you are capable and do not cover up real problems or concerns. Work on developing ethical behavior now. Ask questions if you are ever in doubt.
This lesson presents some tips on the basics of public speaking (* items are required) as well as techniques that can help you develop a more professional style. Feel free to continue to refer to these lessons throughout the term to improve yourself.
