Audience and Purpose - Introduction

This section provides guidance on preparing your presentation for your audience.

Here are some questions you should ask yourself about your audience:

  • Who is in the audience?
  • Why are they here?
  • Why might they be interested in this talk?
  • What do I want them to get out of this talk? (these are your main points)

When thinking how to adapt or tune your speech for your audience so you achieve your main purpose, consider:

  • What devices can you use in the introduction to gain attention? E.g. Pictures, jokes, stories, questions
  • What steps can you take to relate this topic directly to this audience in the introduction?
  • How can you develop these main points for this audience?
  • What are appropriate supporting materials for this audience? What should be eliminated or kept in reserve for Q & A?
  • What special steps can you take to make your language clear and appropriate to this audience? Do you use technical jargon like HTML, GUI, compile, applet to describe what you did?
