THE HISTORY OF THE TELEGRAPH: THE FIRST "INTERNET"
These days, it is easy to think of the internet as technology that has just been developed in the past decade or so. However, there are many other technological developments that preceded the internet, without which there would be no internet. The first "internet" or connection of networks by which we communicated was the telegraph. Below is an interactive timeline showing the highlights of this technological creation. For more detail, click on the headings in the ovals. The information on this web page was obtained from The Victorian Internet by Tom Standage. ELEMENTARY OR MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS: This would be a great topic to integrate into a lesson on technology, history, math, science or social studies. Feel free to have your students browse this web page and try some of the activities! |
