MLIS Program Options

The following is a description of program options available to Master of Library and Information Science degree-seeking students. The program also offers continuing education for students who already have an MLIS degree.

Juris Doctor and MLIS Degree

This dual-degree is a collaborative program between the St. Catherine University MLIS program and Hamline University School of Law. This innovative program, the only one of its kind in Minnesota and one of less than 10 in the nation, prepares students for a successful career as a law librarian or a legal information professional.

Students wishing to complete a J.D. degree through Hamline University Law School (HULS) and MLIS degree at the same time must complete the application process and be admitted to each program. Upon admission to each program, students take their first year of study as part of the Hamline cohort. In the second and third years, students may register for courses in both programs. Six credits from an approved list of courses in the HULS curriculum will be accepted as meeting requirements for the MLIS law concentration program. Six credits from an approved list of courses in the MLIS curriculum will be accepted as meeting course requirements for the J.D. degree.

Archives Certification

MLIS students who wish to pursue careers in archives may take the archival certification examination of the Academy of Certified Archivists following graduation. Recommended courses for students who wish to pursue careers in archives are:

LIS 7130 Preservation and Conservation
LIS 7750 Archival Administration and Services
LIS 7993 Practicum (three semester hours) or
LIS 8810 Advanced Archival Management

and one or more of the following:

LIS 7110 Early Books and Manuscripts
LIS 7120 History of the Printed Book
LIS 7530 Internet Design and Fundamentals
LIS 7590 Digital Libraries Special Studies in Librarianship
LIS 882 Metadata for Internet Resources

School Library Media Certification

The School Library Media certification aims to educate entry-level elementary, middle and senior high school library media specialists and provide the foundation for life-long professional development. The prescribed course sequence fulfills the requirements for the Minnesota School Library Media Specialist license. Students do not have to be MLIS degree-seeking students to enroll in the School Library Media certification program, although they often are.

The program reflects Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, the national guidelines of the American Association of School Librarians and Association for Educational Communications and Technology.

Students develop skills in providing, administering and integrating a wide variety of programs and services that encourage young people to become effective users of ideas and information. Course work in curriculum leadership and using technology for learning emphasizes the library media specialist's roles as learner and teacher, administrator, information specialist and partner in creating a learning community sustained by a dynamic library media program.

Certificates of Special Study (Post-Master's)

For library and information science professionals who have earned an MLIS degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association, the MLIS program offers Certificates of Special Study (CSS) as part of its continuing education programs.

These certificate programs are designed for those who want to:

The Certificate of Special Study requires 15 semester credits (five courses) beyond the Master of Library and Information Science degree.

Students seeking post-master's certificates of special study must apply for admission following the same procedures for master's degree students.

In consultation with the faculty advisors, students may design customized programs of study to meet their career objectives.

Non-Degree Seeking Student

Applicants in the following categories may be admitted as non-degree seeking students:
