History of Information Science at the College

Students who entered the College of St. Catherine Master of Library Science program before fall 2006 matriculate at Dominican University, while those entering after fall 2006 matriculate at St. Kate's. Why the difference? The answer lies in the program's history...

Since 1918, the program in library science and the current undergraduate information management curriculum have supported the educational aspirations of women to become liberally educated and qualified library and information professionals.

In 1992 the College of St. Catherine and Rosary College (now Dominican University) agreed to collaborate in providing a library science masters degree program accredited by the American Library Association. Students enrolled at St. Catherine's receive a degree from Dominican University.

In the spring of 2005, the faculty and administration at St. Catherine's requested pre-candidacy status from the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation as the first step in meeting the Standards for an accredited degree program separate from the program offered with Dominican University. Pre-candidacy was granted and in April, 2006 the program was moved to Candidacy status.

During the next two years, the faculty and staff, in cooperation with students, alumna and members of the professional library and information services community in the Twin Cities will demonstrate that the Masters of Library and Information Science curriculum and co-curricular activities meet the Standards for Accreditation. A decision for a fully accredited program is expected in January 2009.

This is an exciting time for all involved with the Master of Library Science Program at the College of St. Catherine.
