Social work students in class
Social work majors learn to work with diverse populations, reflecting a commitment to social justice, human rights and professional ethics.

Social Work

Social work degrees are offered through the School of Social Work, sponsored jointly by St. Catherine University and the University of St. Thomas. Our social work degree programs are rooted in a philosophy of social responsibility and respect for human rights. They prepare students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for ethical social work practice and leadership in multiple settings and with diverse populations. The joint programs are open to both women and men, meet on both campuses and are available in day, evening and weekend formats.

Bachelor’s degree programs

The undergraduate program prepares students for generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. It emphasizes the development of the individual student along with a professional knowledge base and related practice skills. The School also offers a minor in social welfare. St. Kate’s undergraduate students apply to St. Catherine University and choose a full-time weekday option or a weekend/evening/online option for working adults. St. Thomas undergraduate students apply to the University of St. Thomas.

Master of Social Work

Our Master of Social Work (MSW) program empasizes clinical social work practice. The program embraces the practitioner-scholar model for both faculty and graduate students. Faculty are grounded in active clinical practice and research. Candidates for the MSW degree must satisfactorily complete a clinical research project that demonstrates a contribution to knowledge for clinical social work practice.

Our clinical curriculum is consistent with newly increased standards for the Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) license in Minnesota. St. Catherine University handles the admission process for all new students to the MSW program.
