You found Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Also called a Quaking aspen, this medium to large tree grows 40 to 60 feet tall (7).  The leaves are alternate, simple and are round or egg shaped.  The leaves have flattened petioles. The fruit is a tufted capsule with 6 to 8 seeds (2). Trembling aspen is shade-intolerant. It is the most widely distributed tree in North America.
