Downy Serviceberry

 

 

 

 

 

 

You found Downy serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea).

 

 

 

 

 

Also known as a Juneberry, this shrub or small tree can grow from 6 to 25 feet tall (7).  The leaves are alternate, simple and have a pointed tip with finely toothed margins. The flowers are white and appear in April and May (1).  The fruit is a pome that is mature in the summer with 4 to 10 seeds per fruit (6). Birds and mammals distribute the seeds.
