You found Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It is a large tree that has leaves that are pinnately lobed. The acorns are large with a fringe-like border. Seed dispersal is from August to September. The leaves are dark green and slightly shiny above (11).  The Bur oak grows slowly and is long-lived (2). It is distributed throughout the North and Central states as well as the Great Plains.
