The University is committed to addressing all forms of oppression and works to create a safe space where people of all races can learn about the impact of racism on our community and society. At St. Kate's you will find:
- A multitude of speakers, forums, trainings, and events throughout the year. Offerings such as the Minority Reporter, Llewellen Smith of Vital Pictures and Heartwork: continuing the racial dialogue create spaces for dialogue and education on systemic oppression.
- Opening the door for women of color through programs like First Step Summer Institute and Step-by-Step Institute. These programs address the needs of women of color considering a university education.
- Supporting students of color by providing unique programs and services for students of color and international students through our Office of Multicultural and International Programs and Services (MIPS).
We strive to inspire and stimulate students, community members, and local organizations to build relationships across differences.
First Step Summer Institute
The First Step program is a free college immersion program that nurtures the personal development of young women of color. This one week residential program offers an opportunity to get a taste of university life, social activities, and university preparation. First Step helps students make a successful transition from high school to college. First Step faculty collaborate with professionals in admissions, financial aid, student affairs, academic affairs and career development to provide hands-on training and support.
Step-by-Step Institute
A summer program which prepares women of color who delayed attending college for a successful transition into St. Kate's.
