Nicole Haase ’09

Bertha, Minn.

3-3 Program in Physical Therapy
Undergraduate Day

Nicole Haase ’09 fell in love with St. Kate’s during an overnight visit where she felt welcome and comfortable. She likes the small, but urban, character of the campus. Most importantly, however, St. Kate’s gives Haase the opportunity to foster her independence.  “You learn to be your own person here,” she says.

It helps that at St, Kate’s, Nicole Haase says she is viewed and treated as a person, not just a number. A varsity volleyball player, Haase recalls when her professor from The Reflective Woman course attended one of her games. “In class the next day he told me I played well and that he enjoyed the game,” she says. “I really felt noticed and appreciated as an individual.”

Being an athlete at St. Kate’s helps Haase learn time-management skills and meet new people. Participating in sports also provides her with a fun outlet to manage stress and encourages her to excel in her studies. For example, Hasse’s coach ensures that players keep up with their course work and communicate with their professors about their training and game schedules.

Off the court, Haase works in the Library and as a nursing assistant at Bethany, a convent retirement home for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She loves the opportunity to begin using her physical therapy skills and the chance to get to know the sisters, many of whom are St. Kate’s alumnae. Haase has had the opportunity to work with women who have traveled the world, or who have careers as doctors, lawyers and pharmacists. “They are amazing and accomplished women,” she says.
