Craft a good news story

Craft a good news story
Good news stories are compelling, engaging and authentic.
A good headline draws the reader into the body of the story. An attention-grabbing photo amplifies the story's message and makes it memorable to the reader.
Goals
The goal of the St. Kate's news site is to showcase the stories of students, faculty and staff. These stories help to draw audiences in to the university community and provide story ideas to editors and reporters.
In addition we look for stories to:
- Illustrate and illuminate the University’s mission, vision and strategic plan
- Showcase diversity–both cultural and academically
- Represent a variety of departments and schools
Media outlets may utilize news site stories directly and give St. Kate's stories a wider audience.
What's news?
Marketing and Communications (MarComm) is always looking for ideas to consider for stories on the St. Kate's news site and to pitch to reporters and editors in the media.
Ideas are evaluated for news value and ability to support St. Catherine University’s strategic mission.
When organizing your story idea or event, remember that news stories always answer five key questions:
- WHO
- WHAT
- WHERE
- WHEN
- WHY
For specific story ideas and news media pitches, MarComm staff members work six weeks to a month in advance.
What’s your visual?
Compelling photographs or artwork can powerfully round out a story and hold the reader’s attention. When considering your story, it’s helpful if you can identify visuals that we can utilize to illustrate your story with more impact.
