Nursing FAQ »

Acceptance to the Associate of Science in Nursing program at St. Catherine is a two-step process:

Step 1: Acceptance to the Minneapolis campus as a pre-nursing student.

All students interested in the Associate of Science in Nursing program must attend a Nursing Information Session. Applications will only be available at these sessions. Students cannot apply online. If you are absolutely unable to attend an information session, you must contact the admission counselor at banelson@stkate.edu.

All students who intend to pursue the Associate of Science in Nursing program will first be reviewed and considered for admission to the University as a pre-nursing student.

The prerequisites (see step two) need not be completed to be eligible to apply for the Pre-Nursing program. As a Pre-Nursing student, you may complete any prerequisites you may have remaining or other liberal arts and science courses required for the Associate of Science in Nursing program.

To be accepted to the University as a pre-nursing student, your application and supporting materials will be reviewed based on past academic history and your personal statement.

The goal of the admission process is to admit a diverse, motivated group of pre-nursing students capable of succeeding in a rigorous academic program. See the How to Apply page for more specific information on the application process.

Once the admission committee has reviewed your file, an admission decision letter will be mailed to you. Notify the Office of Admission if your address changes at any point during the admission process. After acceptance, more information will be sent that will allow you to prepare for the fall semester.

Step 2: Acceptance to the nursing program.

Once accepted to the Minneapolis campus as a pre-nursing student, students will work on prerequisites for eligiblity to apply to the associate nursing program. All pre-nursing students who have been admitted to St. Catherine and meet the program requirements are eligible to complete a separate application to the nursing program during the designated application dates. This application will only be available from the Nursing Department prior to the application dates. Any student not accepted to the University as a pre-nursing student will not be eligible to complete the Application to Program.

Pre-nursing students may complete the Application to Major for the day program (fall semester program start) or evening/weekend program (winter semester program start). If you have not met the requirements at the time of application, you will not be considered, and your application will be canceled. Proof of eligibility must be provided at the time of application. If any requirements were completed at another institution, you are responsible for verifying that the official transcript is currently in your file or is submitted with the application. Official transcripts must come in a signed, sealed envelope. Unofficial transcripts will not be accepted.

To be admitted into the nursing major, students must demonstrate competencies required for success in a demanding clinical program. These competencies include the ability to communicate effectively in speech, reading and writing; measure and calculate accurately; use critical analysis and problem-solving skills; and synthesize and apply information.
