Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay
|
Edmund Hillary, who along with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first to climb Mount Everest, died on January 11, 2008 at the age of 88. Following the 1953 Everest expedition, the mountain climber from New Zealand went to Antarctica, reaching the South Pole in early 1958. During his life he continued to climb mountains, both in the Himalayas and Antarctic.
In addition to his exploring, Hillary spent his life helping the people of Nepal. In 1960 he founded the Himalayan Trust, an organization providing schools and health care to the Sherpas. |
