Betty Friedan, 1921-2006

Betty Friedan, a pioneer in the modern women's movement, died February 4, 2006, on her 85th birthday.

In her book The Feminine Mystique, published in 1963, she wrote about the frustrations of educated women, who were expected to remain housewives and find fulfillment in their husbands and children.

She was a founder of the National Organization for Women and the National Women's Political Caucus.
