Search the Web

The Internet is an incredible source for information. There are many ways to search the Internet, but be sure to evaluate everything you find there, especially if you're using the information for a paper.

  • Search Engines (like Google) scan the Web for sites matching your search terms. The more specific your topic, the better they work.
  • Metasearch Engines search several search engines at once.
  • Subject Guides are lists of Web sites arranged by topic. Use one of these if you are looking for general information.

Examples of Search Engines:

  • Google
One of the largest and most popular search engines. Includes separate image, news, and other search engines.
  • Yahoo! and Alta Vista
Two other large search engines. Separate searches for images and news; Alta Vista also searches video and audio files.
  • Ask Jeeves
Enter a search in plain English and Ask Jeeves responds with a series of questions to focus your search.

Examples of Meta Search Engines:

Note: Multiple search engines usually retrieve fewer results per search engine than searching them individually.

  • DogPile
One of the best multiple search engines. There are options to search news, images, audio, and multimedia.
  • Vivisimo
Another good metasearch engine, you can specify which engines it searches.
  • KartOO
Uses a visual display instead of a list to show results.
