Finding Journal Articles

Finding journal articles can be the most important-- and sometimes most difficult-- part of the research process. This guide will walk you through the process of searching, finding, and obtaining the text of articles at the CSC Libraries. As always, you can get more help with finding journal articles by asking a Reference Librarian.

Finding Journal Articles

I need to Search for Articles.

I already have a citation and I need to find the text of an article.

Databases and Indexes

Databases and Indexes allow you to search for journal and newspaper articles. Use the CSC Libraries' Databases and Indexes to find articles on your topic.

  • Go to Databases and Indexes. Use the option to Browse Databases by Title to find a particular database. Or, use the drop-down menu to Browse Databases by subject and find a database to search.
  • Get help using the databases by looking at the Guides to CSC Databases.

Holdings Information

While searching many of our databases (InfoTrac, ERIC, CINAHL, PsycInfo, etc.), you will find information and links to our journal holdings. This means the database will indicate whether or not we have a subscription to the journal cited, including a range of dates and/or volume and issue numbers.

The link Find other sources for full text will tell you if CSC owns the print version of the journal and what date ranges are available, and if online versions of the full text are available.

Hint: Pay special attention to the dates available. Keep in mind that your journal may be listed, but not the dates for the article you need.

The full text is available.

The full text is not available and I need to find the text of an article.

Obtaining the text of an article

Links to the text

If the article you need has a link to the full text, all you need to do is click on the link, find your article (usually by date and title), and you can usually choose to print, save or email the article.

College of St. Catherine Library's Print Holdings

St. Paul Campus Library
If your journal is in print, you will find current issues (the past 5 years for most journals) in the Reference Room on the main floor. They are arranged alphabetically by title. If you do not find the journal you are looking for, please ask at the Reference Desk. Older periodicals are not accessible to the public until the construction on the library is complete.

Minneapolis Campus Library
The current year's periodicals are located across from the Circulation desk, arranged alphabetically by title. The older periodicals begin after the Reference collection, on the west end of the Library.

Periodicals do not circulate, but you may make photocopies. Copies are 10¢ per page. Bring cash. Get more information on Photocopying, Printing, and Microforms.

The Periodical Cat

If you already have a citation and need to find the full text of an article, the Periodical Cat is the first place you should look. The Periodical Cat is a listing of all of the periodicals (journals, magazines, and newspapers) to which the library has access. These may be in print or electronic format. Periodicals not listed on the Periodical Cat are not available from the CSC Libraries.

How to Search:

Go to the Periodical Cat.

  • Find journals by title or ISSN: Use the search box to enter the title, the words in a title, or the ISSN of the journal
  • Browse journals alphabetically: Use the alphabetical links to browse for the journal title.
  • Browse e-journals by subject: Use the drop-down menu to choose a subject area to find journals.

The journal I need is listed on the Periodical Cat and the full text is available.

The journal I need is not listed on the Periodical Cat.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

If the journal you need is not listed on the Periodical Cat and not available from CSC Libraries, you may use Interlibrary Loan to request the article. This service is available to current CSC Students, Faculty, and Staff. You will need to enter your CSC barcode.
