St. Paul Campus Library Reference Graduate Assistant

Position Description

The College of St. Catherine St. Paul Library is located in the Coeur de Catherine Student Center and Learning Commons. The Library’s collection includes over 217,000 volumes and 846 current journals, in addition to a variety of online sources including access to over 10,000 full-text periodicals. The St. Paul Library services undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in day, evening and weekend programs as well as faculty, staff, and members of the community. The Reference Assistant will be mentored by and work alongside any of the four professional Reference Librarians at the St. Paul campus. The Assistant may also work with other staff members of the Circulation Department, the Technical Services Department, and Media Services Department, in addition to working with other student employees. This position may require evening and weekend work as assigned.

The Graduate Reference Assistantship is awarded once a semester for a total of 10 hours per week for 10 weeks at a pay rate of $10/hour.

Requirements for all positions

Additional qualifications:

  • Completion of additional LIS courses, especially those that provide background and knowledge useful to the position (web skills, reference, instruction, etc.)
  • Flexible schedule and availability
  • Technical, computer, and web authoring (Dreamweaver or similar) skills and/or experience
  • Experience and comfort in teaching, training, and/or public speaking
  • Interest in academic librarianship
  • Experience in customer service
  • Enthusiastic, willing to learn, good listening and communication skills

Primary responsibilities:

The Reference Assistant will work with the reference librarians to provide reference service throughout the semester. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting students, faculty, staff, and community users with reference and research needs
  • Assisting with library instruction, both one-on-one and formal classroom settings
  • Creating pathfinders, web pages, guides, tutorials
Other duties as assigned, depending on library’s needs and Assistant’s skills and qualifications
