Art is my opportunity to challenge ordinary everyday objects by changing the standard view and providing a concentrated detail. I embrace the opportunity to challenge an audience to think about what is being said through the composition of a design. I spend my time exploring spatial depth, constructing layers of manipulated images of the common objects that flood our lives. I try to bring them close enough so that the viewer is required to investigate them, maybe not for their expected purpose but for their ambiguous charm.  My treatment is not to distort the form but to present it in a distinctive manner. Being a graphic artist allows me to use my examination of preconceived objects to develop a fresh design.

I was born in a northwest suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am a printmaker, and also a biologist and a music lover. My recent work at a local zoo and conservatory evoked a need for conservation in me that I want to share with others through my work. My Bears series is a statement about the need to conserve not only the bears of the world, but the ancient cultures of the world as well. My Musical series illustrates the color and texture found in instrumental music. Each musical piece and each Musical panel has its own unique “flavor”: ragtime on a piano, classical on a viola, Irish reels on a flute. Family Music is a reflection of members of my family and the instruments they play. The subjects I use in my images are all things that I enjoy.

Using photography, drawing, and digital mediums, I create narrative pieces about the nature of being human. My background in psychology has had a significant impact on my direction as an artist. I am interested in how the internal conflicts we all face in our lives are expressed externally: in a vacant stare, slouched shoulders, or protective sunglasses masking our eyes. Although figures are not always present in the work, all of the work is an attempt to explore human emotion. I offer bits and pieces of a story and invite the viewer to fill in the details.
