History

The Friends of the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery at St. Catherine University have in common a love of art and a commitment to education. They are a dynamic group of alumnae and friends, who nourish their interest in the vital arts and support students through gallery exhibitions and art programs at St. Catherine.


SInce its inception in 1993, The Friends of the Gallery have supported:

♦ Over 35 Friends of the Gallery Awards that financially recognize students majoring in Studio Art and Art History for exceptional work in their discipline.
♦ Honorariums for guest speakers such as the visiting artists from Great Britain for the U.S. Premier of “Iron Maidens” exhibit at the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery, fall 2011.
♦ Professional Development for Studio Art majors to prepare them for writing grants, applying to graduate school and/or seeking professional employment.
♦ Production costs for various printed materials such as the recently published brochure promoting “Women and the Arts Minor,” a new minor developed to expand opportunities in the arts for St. Catherine University students.
♦ Funds dedicated to the restoration of works in the university’s Fine Art Collection, such as the terra cotta sculpture, “L’Orage,” By the early 20th century Czech artist, Alphonse Mucha.
