When I create art, I look to my life experiences for inspiration. I look to what is going on in my life as well as those around me. This has led my work to become socio-political. It is connected to farming and rural life in Midwest America, which is where I grew up.

The majority of these designs are created with charcoals, graphite, and/or ink. These dark and traditionally monochromatic materials have a distinct expressive quality that provides a sense of foreboding. I work in an expressionistic style by mixing media and using heavy, bold lines to portray the emotional content of the subject matter of landscapes, farms, and people. My works are confrontational, boldly declaring the possible implications of our actions in the Midwest communities.

I take a lot of things personally. My work aims to impact narrow mindedness by visualizing the consequences of misunderstanding in our world. The visuals I’ve created are bold, raw, and literal… like my personality, it bares all and guessing is unnecessary. I am a graphic design artist; and I set no limits or boundaries for myself either conceptually or materially. I work with any medium that suits my need.

Water is a recurring element in my work. I can best express myself through water because it can take any shape, gentle and peaceful or brash and violent. It is my serenity and a way to channel my intense feelings. In Raw Revelation the slow drip…drip…drip of the water falling from my eye represents an unveiling of my inner sadness and frustration about the constant cycle of war, murder, hatred and violence. The accompanying ABC picture book is a garish reminder of the people who have brutally suffered for simply being… who they were.

This is my first and real raw revelation, the beginning of a personal journey.

I am an eco-feminist. I confront issues ranging from animal extinction to traditional women’s work. Tactile by nature I respond intuitively and impulsively to my materials. I am primarily a metal-smith but blurring the boundaries into fiber arts and environmental installation intrigues me. My work combines elements of organic matter with materials of industry and fine art. Some examples of this are the blending of items such as sheet steel in nature or dog hair and sterling silver.

I am attracted to the act of making: creating and completing something with my own hands, having contact with the materials. I have found that the connection between my head, eyes, and hands has always been stronger than the connection between my head and mouth. My ability to communicate is therefore rooted and expanded in my abilities as a graphic designer. My work is bold and clean. For me, simplicity and organization are the foundation of good communication and design.

I am a sculptor, painter, thespian, and sometimes a blend of all three. My multiple passions allow me to explore my life as an artist in a variety of ways; it is my visual art, however, that helps me understand my uncertainties and insecurities of being a woman, an American, and member of the human race. These themes are present in the fragility and vulnerability of birds, embedded in my self-portraits, and in the silent proclamation of written text. I utilize words that embody more than one meaning and explore the contrast of being bound for greatness and bound to a place that is not-so-great. My process is generally evident in the final product, and I enjoy using the “happy accidents” that occur during creation and result in a more raw or unfinished appearance. My hope is that as I explore and come to conclusions about issues that are important to me, the viewer will develop this consciousness, as well.

Art gives me the opportunity and freedom to express myself visually without being limited or trapped by words or grammar. While creating, I do not go for the easy way but strive for the innovative. I do my utmost to have viewers feel a sense of happiness or humor in my artwork. A pallet of bright vibrant hues draws in my viewers with curiosity. Once viewers are drawn to my pieces, I want them to interact with them, to be engaged, and to give them more then a quick glance before they move on.

As a designer, I tackle problems differently than your average artist. I solve the troubles I come upon with graphic design components unique to my abilities with color, space and texture. I approach artistic challenges with vigor and with the confidence that there is a solution which I must discover in order for me to complete the task at hand. The puzzle that is a designer’s task is a complex and unique one that requires time, patience and intelligent creativity in order to fit the final piece and produce a quality product acceptable to the client’s needs.

I am as much an anthropologist as a photographer. Through the process of making pictures I study the relationships both created and avoided by people in public. With my camera, I seek out the quirks and subcultures of my community. Photography is my means of social commentary, through which I intend to uncover what is often hidden in plain sight.

My work in mixed media installation is informed by my attraction to physical space and the process of construction. The content of my pieces varies, ranging from women ’s sexuality and reproduction to the internal structure of animals. The abstract works I create often evolve out of a single phrase or word such as ‘uncontrolled proliferation’ or ‘progress’. The resulting installations are comprised of multiple, nearly identical forms. I am drawn to the meditative qualities in the process of obsessive repetitive construction. I subvert the importance of the object by installing many small pieces allowing greater focus on their arrangement in the space. The impermanence of installation art draws attention to the relationships between viewer, artwork, and physical space. The installation determines a space in which the viewer feels conflicted and threatened by its presence.

I am an illustrator. I reject cultural dependence on computer technology in favor of ink pens and paper to create bold line-art, a process that helps me preserve my unique voice. I am influenced by Do-It-Yourself philosophy, which is foundational to the woodcuts, collages, and the contemporary illustrators of subculture media that inspire my art. Through my work, I want to inspire and empower others, inviting them to celebrate the simplicity of life and the complexity of identity.

Through ink drawings and digital prints, I visually investigate the strange forms that I draw in my sketchbooks — angry bunnies, scarred-up skin sheep, naked rocks… Whether adorably creepy, awkward, vulgar, or absolutely absurd — I set no boundary on the weirdness of my imagination.
