DESCRIPTION:Tomás Gómez Membreño will speak about the 2009 coup  in Honduras\, U.S. intervention\, and the impact on Indigenous people in  his country.  Monday\, October 15\, 7-8:30 p.m. Coeur de Catherine 362. In Honduras Tomas Gómez Membreño works for the  non-profit Indigenous rights organization COPINH (Civic Council of  Popular Indigenous Organizations).  Gomez is a member of the Lencan  people\, an indigenous community in the southwest of Honduras. He has  long been an active member of COPINH\, using adult education and  community radio as tools for mobilizing indigenous communities.  Gomez  has been part of a vibrant nation-wide network of organizations  representing small farmers\, women\, afro-descendants\, and members of the  LGBTQ community. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of International  Languages & Literatures\, Office of Global Studies\, MIPS\, and Campus  Ministry.
