After Nature
Paula McCartney, Guy Nelson and Erika Olson
September 8 - October 21, 2006
After Nature is a group exhibition that explores the human
relationship to the natural world. The three exhibiting artists begin with the natural as their point of reference, but
also work after nature in the sense of viewing their subjects through the
filter of human culture. Their work is playful and humorous, while also
revealing human desires to understand and control.
Paula McCartney will exhibit photographs from her Bird Watching series. In these pseudo-scientific photographs, she places colorful fake birds into natural, wooded settings.
Guy Nelson's sculpture Duck Duck Goose vs. Duck Duck Gray Duck has a distinctly dark twist. In this piece, a grouping of oversized, painted lawn ornaments represent two versions of the classic children's game in which the odd one out is "it."
Erika Olson will exhibit new paintings and sculpture. She is known for lush, decorated patterned paintings of stylized flower and plant life, as well as sculptural replications of vegetative growth sewn out of |
