Jennifer

Biology major and Minnesota native Jennifer appreciates the chance to learn and grow at St. Kate’s. Even when she visited as a prospective student, she felt comfortable. “It was the warm and welcoming atmosphere that brought me here,” she says. “St. Kate’s nourishes all students to become strong, independent and intelligent women. The classes here are academically challenging and you’ll be able to find a number of subjects you’re interested in and would like to take.”

Last spring, Jennifer worked as a teacher’s assistant for a general biology lab. She’s also taken advantage of the school’s “shadow” program. “I was able to follow a physical therapist and a physician through their work days,” she said. “I also took advantage of the career center. They helped me with my resume and with cover letters and applications for internships.”

Jennifer also enjoys living on campus and going to school in the Twin Cities: “Everything’s convenient for me. And this is a great area to go to school. There are great restaurants and coffee shops nearby as well as rollerblading and bike paths.”

Jennifer will finish her studies in 2004 and plans on attending graduate school.

Naly

Naly sticks to the basics: “If you’re the kind of person who enjoys challenges and likes to have fun, then St. Kate's is for you."

A nursing major, she enjoys going to school in her home town of St. Paul. “I’m away from my parents but close enough to visit them when I want to.” Her parents respect their daughter's choice of St. Kate's. “They trust my judgment in choosing an all women’s college,” she says.

She also enjoys the sense of warmth and closeness at St. Kate's. “Everyone works together here — we collaborate. People at St. Kate's are dedicated to improving conditions for women. That’s what I like most.”

And academics? “My classes have been good experiences for me,” she says. “The professors are great and have a deep interest in their subject.” Her freshman year, Naly worked as an ambassador in the admission office. She chose not to work her sophomore year. She lives on campus and takes an active role in the LEAD team and the Asian Woman’s Association.

Kunthea

“You can express yourself freely here,” says Kunthea. “And you have opportunities for success that you won’t find at other colleges. These are two reasons why high school students should choose St. Kate’s.”

Kunthea is from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She just finished her freshman year and majors in information systems. “I wanted to experience a woman’s college,” she says. “And it’s important to my parents as well; they don’t have to worry much even though I’m far from home. They also feel confident that their daughter will get a good education.”

Living and studying on campus is a plus for Kunthea. “This is a good place for students,” she says. “It’s very peaceful.” That’s important because once she graduates in 2005, she’ll enter the highly competitive and often stressful world of being a business analyst.

During the school year, Kunthea lives and works on campus.

Jen

An avid hockey player, Jen was born and raised in South St. Paul, Minnesota. “I only started to appreciate my hometown once I got to St. Kate's. Now I see all the great learning opportunities and entertaining things to do here.”

Jen majors in International Relations and Russian and lives on campus at Whitby Hall. “With a little creativity, you can make a dorm room feel like home,” she said. “Plus, some of my classes are in Whitby so I don’t have to bundle up during the winter!”

As far as Jen’s concerned, St. Kate's is a great place for college. “You can take an active part in the life of the school. There are teams, clubs and organizations to fit your interests. If you’re an athlete, St. Kate's is the best because the sports programs don’t have to compete for funding.”

“My parents are also impressed with the school. They admire how involved the professors are and how much they support the students. They can see how much I enjoy my classes.”

When it comes to academics, Jen’s just as enthusiastic.“My classes are great. The teachers demand a lot but they’re always available when you need help.”

Jen plays on the Wildcats hockey team and is active in the Political Science Club. She’s still exploring a career path, though she’d like to work at a government position where she can put her skills in Russian to good use.

Alejandra

This future attorney recommends St. Kate's to motivated high school students: "If you want a comfortable place, somewhere you feel at home, but you also want to work hard, you want to excel, then St. Kate's is the place to come."

Alejandra just completed her sophomore year, and lives on campus in Whitby Hall. A native of Managua, Nicaragua, she majors in political science and history and minors in international relations. She says, "I like the close relationship between students and professors and the one-to-one interaction."

Even though she's from a much warmer place, Alejandra likes Minnesota. "It has a lively city like Minneapolis," she said, "and a more relaxed one like St. Paul. Plus, it's safe. My parents appreciate the ambiance of the Twin Cities and feel that I'm getting an excellent education."

Alejandra works at AmericaReads. She enjoys music, dancing salsa and working out. She also devotes time to doing translation work for physicians.

Cassie

“I chose St. Kate's because I wanted to go to a women’s college,” says Cassie. “I visited the Twin Cities area and really liked what I saw. And once I got to school I discovered that St. Kate's had a really open atmosphere. My parents liked it because it was less expensive than going to the in-state school in Montana.”

A May 2002 graduate from St. Kate's, Cassie will begin law school in the fall. She has no hesitation about recommending St. Kate's: “It’s a very supportive school. And it encourages leadership. The campus is beautiful, and the faculty take a real interest in what they do. It’s a fun place as well, but also a place where [students] take learning very seriously.”

Cassie lived on campus with her husband and young son in the Alberta Apartments, on the floor reserved for student parents. “There was a wonderful sense of community there,” she said. “We gave each other support and often baby-sat each other's children.”

While majoring in English and journalism, Cassie worked in the communications office and also found time for extracurricular activities. She was a member of the swim team for three years, a campus ministry volunteer and a member of Lambda Sigma Tau, a social/service sorority.

Jennifer

A chemistry major with an eye toward a career in biochemistry, Jennifer took a different route than most getting to St. Kate’s. “I did not exactly choose St. Kate’s,” she said, “because I had not heard about it before. It was an opportunity that came up. I took that opportunity and I liked it.” As far as a choice for high school students, Jennifer says, “It’s the best school to start off as a freshman. There are advisers who help out with your academic interests, and it’s important to use them. The staff at the multicultural office is very friendly, and the host family program is wonderful because it helps international students understand American culture.”

Jennifer comes from Embu, Kenya, but enjoys going to school in the Twin Cities: “It’s the best decision anyone can ever make. You get to meet new people all the time from various cultures, which helps out a lot with culture shock. The transportation is convenient, and the Twin Cities has world — class recreation areas and shopping centers.”

Looking to graduate in 2004, Jennifer spends her time reading, dancing, working out and visiting with friends. She’s also active in the band and plays for the Wildcats soccer team.

Swathi

Swathi calls both Canada and Kenya home. Her first response to St. Kate’s was similar to that of many students: “I was very impressed. The atmosphere was very welcoming. I’ve made some great friends since being here.” Swathi also appreciates the academic climate of St. Kate’s. “It’s challenging,” she says, “but I believe academics should be challenging. My parents respect the academic discipline and high standards St. Kate’s offers me and offered my sister Shilpa when she attended.”

Warm atmosphere and high standards are just two reasons Swathi believes high school students should choose St. Kate’s: “This is a cultural school. It focuses on diversity and provides a great foundation for students entering college. St. Kate’s offers a great deal.”

And as for going to school in the Twin Cities? “It’s a cold place to live,” Swathi says, “but I like it here.”

Swathi, a chemistry major with a minor in philosophy, fills her time with an abundance of extracurricular activities, including the band, soccer team and work as an orientation leader. While in school, she works in the admission office. She plans to graduate in 2005 and is considering the possibility of a medical career.
