Core Courses

We keep classes small. Three-quarters of our classes have fewer than 20 students. You can have a meaningful discussion with your professor and your fellow students — and your voice won't be lost in the echo of a large lecture hall. Check out a typical classroom to get a sense for a general classroom.

Every student takes core courses that provide a broad-based, liberal arts foundation, with a special emphasis on communication and information technology.

At St. Kate's, self-discovery begins in the first year during the required course"The Reflective Woman" in which students focus on themselves and their role in the world.

In the junior or senior year, each student explores her own sense of justice and injustice and how it applies to today's society in "The Global Search for Justice."

Other core requirements include:

  • History (1 course)

  • Literature (1 course)

  • Fine arts (1 course)

  • Philosophy (1 or 2 courses)

  • Theology (1 or 2 courses)

  • Foreign language

  • Health and fitness (1 or 2 courses)

  • Social science (1 course)

  • Laboratory science (1 course)

  • Mathematics or statistics (1 course)

  • (For a B.S. degree, 2 additional mathematics, lab science or social science courses)

Throughout the entire curriculum, students build portfolios of their work: papers, exams, lab reports, research projects, seminar presentations. Portfolios serve as intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth charts that allow you to track your learning during your college years.

Students take notes on their laptops in a fully equipped laptop classroom. For more on our technolgy, visit the
