Why St. Kate’s
We've been educating women to lead and influence for over 100 years. It's only natural that St. Kate’s has a dynamic and vibrant women's studies program.
Interdisciplinary study
The women's studies movement has influenced the curriculum, style of teaching and content of almost every field of study at St. Kate’s. One of the strengths of the women's studies program is that it is interdisciplinary. It draws on knowledge and research from many disciplines — from psychology to biology to English to history — to help you understand women’s experiences in the past and analyze women’s situations today, both nationally and globally.
A women's perspective
Faculty from many departments across campus — biology, communication studies, English, history, philosophy, psychology, theology — have developed courses as well as enhanced existing curriculum to uniquely address content and issues from a women's perspective. Theses courses can be applied to majors in two departments.
For instance, our Biology of Women course, offered through the biology department, is also cross listed as a women's studies course. It can be applied to a major in women's studies and a major in biology. Plus, it fulfills the the liberal arts science requirement.
Beyond St. Kate’s
St. Kate’s women's studies students work closely with faculty and students from other college campuses through the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC) women's studies program students. At its annual conference, students from St. Catherine University, Augsburg College, University of St. Thomas and Hamline University present their research and special projects and see what other students have done for research and internships.
Community work and learning
Many women's studies courses include a service learning or action research component. Students active in service learning develop a deep understanding of social change and interact in rich, multicultural environments. They build leadership and lifetime workforce skills. As students learn, they also meet the needs and goals of our community partners. Service learning components are coordinated through St. Kate’s Community Work and Learning program.
Scholarships
The women’s studies program collaborates with the Abigail Quigley McCarthy Center for Women Research, Resources, and Scholarship to offer a number of awards and scholarships. Through scholarships, students can participate in seminars that focus on women and public policy. Other awards provide students, faculty, staff, and alumnae recognition for academic work and leadership.
