Why women's studies: “I'm committed to linking academic work to the pursuit of a more just world. Academics too rarely take the step of moving beyond analysis to develop strategies for change. Women’s studies is a source of hope because we take risks with our ideas and our actions.”
Research interests: Developing strategies to substantively connect academe to diverse communities; race/class/gender and community development; feminism and community; and transformation of higher education.
St. Kate’s connection: Collaborating on a book of essays on feminist perspectives about the history of St. Catherine University; chair of the Centers of Excellence Steering Committee
You'll find me teaching: Foundations in Women’s Studies, Women’s Studies Senior Seminar and Cultural Anthropology
Quote of note: Bernice Johnson Reagon: “It must become necessary for all of us to feel that this is our world. … And watch that ‘our’—make it as big as you can. … That’s why we have to have coalitions. Cause I ain’t gonna let you live unless you let me live. Now there’s danger in that, but there’s also the possibility that we can both live—if you can stand it.”
Education: B.A., psychology, University of Minnesota-Morris; M.A., anthropology, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities; Ph.D., cultural anthropology, feminist studies minor, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
