Spanish

As a Spanish major at St. Kate’s, you’ll develop effective linguistic and cultural communication in a Spanish-speaking environment. The courses develop and maintain Spanish proficiency and provide cultural awareness and sensitivity. With a commitment to diversity, St. Kate’s welcomes many Spanish-speaking international students every year. You will find endless opportunities for learning and fun within the Spanish Department.

Learning in and out of the classroom

As a Spanish student, you are encouraged to engage in experiential or service learning. Together with the Center for Community Work and Learning, the department enthusiastically encourages earning credit towards the major through internships. In recent years students have interned at Neighborhood House, La Clínica, The César Chávez School, Children’s Hospital, C.L.U.E.S. and The Jane Addams School for Democracy.

The world as your classroom

At St. Kate’s, we encourage all students — and especially foreign language majors — to study abroad. Each January, the Spanish Department sponsors study abroad in Mexico or Spain. In addition to programs in Spain and Mexico, more than 50 semester- and year-long programs, January options and summer programs are available around the world. St. Kate’s Global Studies staff will help you learn about the many foreign study opportunities and pick the best option for your needs.
