Why St. Kate’s
The sociology program at St. Kate’s will give you the most dynamic education possible as you explore issues that affect society today.
First-class professors
St. Kate’s sociology faculty members are excellent teachers who also have a broad range of expertise and research interests, including specialties in deviance and inequality, the sociology of war and peace and the sociology of medicine.
Internship possibilities
Most students also participate in internships during their junior and senior years. Internships allow you to refine your skills, broaden your perspectives and make valuable professional connections. Internships refine your skills on the job, give you valuable connections, and let you check out a profession or position.
Making connections
At St. Kate’s, you develop competencies, associations and friendships that carry you through your lifetime. It begins on campus with students and alumnae and extends beyond with introductions to employers and women role models and mentors. The Sociology Department is small and close-knit, providing individualized support to its students.
Shadow Program
The Shadow Program is a popular program where St. Kate’s alumnae working in a wide range of occupations offer to host a current St. Kate’s student at their workplace. Shadowing offers the students a great way to explore an occupation or work environment and connect with an alumna in their field of interest.
By participating in the Shadow Program, you will have the opportunity to observe, ask questions and preview what “a day in the life” of that occupation. Whether you are exploring career options or seeking affirmation that a particular career field is right for you, shadowing can be an eye-opening experience.
Community Work and Learning
The Center for Community Work and Learning provides programs that incorporate classroom learning with fieldwork. This combination increases the relevance of academic material by allowing students to apply their education in a hands-on and beneficial way for both themselves and the community.
Students fulfill unmet needs identified by community leaders and are provided with structured times to reflect on civic, social and inter-cultural issues.
This public work offers an unparalleled opportunity to revitalize the education process while collaborating with community leaders to improve the quality of life for Twin Cities residents.
