Sociology

Sociology is the study of human social behavior. It combines scientific and humanistic perspectives to understand interpersonal relationships and social structures, including culture, actions or behaviors that violate social norms, family, gender roles and bureaucracy or government.

St. Kate's sociology major teaches you how to critically explore these issues, and many others. You'll gain valuable skills in data collection, research analysis and communication (especially writing) — and be prepared for a variety of careers.

Rich and relevant curriculum

Course topics are rich and diverse. In the "Sociology of Health and Medicine" class, for example, you go beyond the medical model of disease and see illness as a social phenomenon. In "Research Methods in Sociology," you'll design a study and measure the results, as well as discuss ethical issues in research.

In the "Challenging Oppressions, Civic Engagement and Change" course, you'll examine systems of power and privilege through readings, discussions, guest speakers and service learning with a community organization.

"As a Katie, you're prepared to think, learn, research and use data to problem solve."

— Kathryn McDonald Hughes, alumna
