Respiratory Care
As members of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, respiratory therapists evaluate, treat and manage patients of all ages with respiratory illnesses and other cardiopulmonary disorders.
As a St. Kate’s respiratory care major, you will be prepared to provide excellent, ethical advanced level respiratory therapy, ready to assume a leadership position in the profession, promote the cardiopulmonary health of society and influence the quality of healthcare services in diverse practice settings.
St. Catherine University is one of the few institutions in the upper Midwest to offer a baccalaureate major in respiratory care. The 40-credit major builds upon a broad foundation of coursework in the liberal arts and basic sciences and prepares students to provide comprehensive and holistic respiratory care to patients in clinical and community settings.
Upon graduation, you will be eligible for the RRT certification exam through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and become licensed as a MN-RCP through the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice.
The profession
In addition to performing therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, respiratory therapists promote cardiopulmonary wellness, disease prevention and management; provide patient, family and community education; participate in life-support activities and are involved in clinical decision making. Respiratory therapists are primarily employed in acute care hospitals.
