Career Possibilities

Philosophy majors often go on to pursue further study at the graduate level, which prepared them to teach philosophy in a college or university.

A philosophy degree does not lock you into a career in academia, however. Look at all of the other fields in which philosophy majors work:

  • Business
  • Communications
  • Computers/information technology
  • Educational administration
  • Finance
  • Government
  • Journalism
  • Law
  • Medicine
  • Public relations
  • Religious ministry

For some of these fields, such as law and medicine, the B.A. degree in philosophy is pre-professional only; but in many fields philosophical training at the undergraduate level is sufficient.

Demand for work in ethics

The need for people with advanced work in applied ethics is expanding rapidly. The fields of business and healthcare have become acutely aware of the ethical problems facing their fields in today's society.

Women in philosophy

Women are particularly in demand as philosophy departments try to broaden and balance the composition of their faculties.

It is advisable to have a Ph.D. degree in order to apply for permanent positions at reputable four-year colleges, so several years of study beyond the bachelor’s degree are needed. A master’s degree may be sufficient for teaching in some two-year colleges.
