All types of organizations need librarians, not just public libraries. In fact, in 2009, US News and World Report ranked librarianship as one of the best careers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for librarians is expected to be increase 7 to 13 percent and job opportunities are expected to be favorable, as a large number of librarians are likely to retire in the coming decade.
The MLIS Advisory Council at St. Kate's has compiled a list of "alternative" career areas for MLIS-degree holders. see "Beyond the Typical Path."
